As you’re driving throughout Rochester Hills, there’s one automaker that you’re sure to recognize and that’s Mercedes-Benz. While the Mercedes-Benz logo has been modified throughout the years, the notable Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star makes these luxury vehicles recognizable on sight. Learn more about the Mercedes-Benz logo meaning and how this symbol came to be with Mercedes-Benz of Rochester.

Mercedes-Benz Logo: The Backstory

Mercedes-Benz was founded in 1890 by Gottlieb Daimler. However, Wilhelm Maybach and Emil Jellinek took over the company (then called Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, or DMG) in 1890, and Daimler’s sons Paul and Adolf would continue to their involvement in the company for years to come.

In 1909, Paul and Adolf recalled a postcard that was sent by their father in 1872, which marked the location of their home with a 3-pointed star. In that same year, DMG acquired the logo and began emblazoning it on all of their vehicles.

Initially, the image was colored in blue, then revised with a laurel border in 1926. In 1934, the color of the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star was changed to silver.

The Mercedes-Benz Logo Meaning

The Mercedes-Benz logo is a nod to the company’s heritage–derived from one man’s dream; a man who wanted to manufacture high-performance vehicles. But, what exactly is the Mercedes-Benz meaning? According to Mercedes-Benz officials, the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star actually refers to the company’s drive for universal motorization! Each point on the star represents an environment — Land, Sea, or Air — which the Daimler brothers believed that Mercedes-Benz would one day take over.

In fact, we believe that this symbolic importance may have been the driving force behind the Daimler brothers’ desire to use their father’s 3-pointed star in the first place!
