How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Row of tires

Tire rotations are an essential part of car maintenance for your Troy and Rochester ride, so, how often should you rotate your tires? A typical tire rotation interval is between 5,000 to 8,000 miles, but you should always double-check the owner’s manual for more accurate details. Learn more about how often to rotate tires from the help of the automotive experts at Mercedes-Benz of Rochester today!

How Often to Rotate Tires: FWD vs. RWD Vehicles

Along with knowing how often to rotate tires, you’ll need to know how this process can change between front-wheel vs. rear-wheel drive. The main difference is where power from the engine is sent. In an FWD car, it is sent to the front tires, while power is sent to the rear tires in a RWD vehicle. The set of tires that receive more power will wear down much faster, so be sure to keep the following information in mind depending on which vehicle you have below:

  • For FWD or RWD cars, tire rotation needs to be performed every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Be sure to consult your owner’s manual for exact figures.
  • If you’re performing a FWD tire rotation yourself, keep in mind to flip sides when moving the rear tires. For example, the rear right tire will go on the front left. However, when moving the front tires to the back, keep them on the same side.
  • When rotating tires on an RWD car, invert the process above. Flip sides when moving the front tires to the back, but keep the rear tires on the same side when moving them forward.
  • Keep in mind how you drive, like off-roading, will affect how often you need to rotate your tires. Talk with the service experts at Mercedes-Benz of Rochester to get a better idea of a maintenance schedule that fits your driving habits.

AWD Tire Rotation Tips

When it comes to tire rotations for all-wheel drive vehicles, this is much different from how it’s done for FWD or RWD vehicles. Many cars with AWD tires need to be rotated every 3,000 – 5,000 miles, but since all tires receive the same amount of power, the process is much more precise. Our team recommends drawing a simple diagram of your drivetrain and using color-coded arrows to help you move your tires properly, as broken down below:

  1. The left rear goes to the right front spot.
  2. The right rear goes to the left front spot.
  3. The right front goes to the left rear spot.
  4. The left front goes to the right rear spot.

Why Rotate Tires?

Not only should you know when to rotate tires, but also why you need to rotate them. The obvious reason is that it extends their condition and longevity, although you’ll eventually need to get a new set. Here are a few more reasons why tire rotations are so essential to your Rochester ride:

  • Improved traction on slippery roads
  • Less noise on the road
  • Relieves unnecessary stress on the drivetrain
