How to Properly Jump-Start a Car

Of course, to jump start your vehicle properly, you'll need a set of jumper cables and another vehicle. You can also purchase a jump-box, that when charged or plugged in has the power to jump start your vehicle. Once you've got that figured out, follow these steps:

  1. Have the good-battery-car park so that both vehicles' batteries are close enough for the jumper cables to reach both batteries, with at least some slack. Check to make sure both parking brakes are engaged. You may need to remove a plastic hood to expose the battery terminals.
  2. Identify the positive and negative terminals of each battery. Make sure they're clean and free of any corrosion. If you have the proper wrench size, it couldn't hurt to ensure the vehicle's battery cables are secured tightly.
  3. Connect the red clamp to the positive post on the dead battery.
  4. Hook the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the battery with the charge.
  5. Connect the black clamp to the negative post on the good battery.
  6. Finally, locate the final clamp and connect it to an unpainted metal surface on your car's frame. This is the grounding connection.
  7. Once everything is hooked up securely, start the engine of the vehicle with the good battery first, then the one with the dead battery.
  8. Once the dead vehicle has been jump-started, carefully remove the jumper cables in the reverse order that they were placed on, then shut off the car that was used to help jump start the dead car.
  9. Keep the engine running on the restarted vehicle for at least 10 minutes to ensure that the weak battery doesn't die again right away. Consult your owner's manual for more info on recommended times.
